D is for Drusilla
Apr. 4th, 2018 07:43 amOne of my favorite clans in Vampire the Masquerade was the Malkavians, a group of vampire all inflicted with some kind of madness.
Never had I encountered any vampire on TV or the movies whom conveys so perfectly what I imagined a Malkavian should be like than Drusilla on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Dru was crazy, scary, sexy, and just plain fun. Her doll collection, her wacky way of talking, all of her mad little quirks made Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel even more exciting. The fact that her madness was inflicted upon her by Angelus emphasized how dark Angel had once been (and could be again upon losing his soul).
Drusilla’s madness coupled with the sight made perfect sense to me. After all, knowing the future might very well drive someone crazy, even if you didn’t have somelike like Angelus doing their best to make your lunacy bloom. This coupled with her chemistry with Spike along the exquisite complexity of her relationship with Darla only made her more fascinating.
Personally, I love femslashing her with faith because of the sheer Gothic prettiness of the two of them, plus their curious juxtaposition as girls who were chosen, and I’d love to see them interacting in a dream like Buffy and Drusilla once did. In fact, I wrote a fanfic myself about it called ‘Like a Slayer’ which is posted at Archive of Our Own. An entire series played out in my imagination, springing from this, only to be buried beneath all of the other projects demanding my attention. (wry grin) Drusilla is the girl Angel destroyed while Faith is the girl Angel saved. I’ve visualized a juxtaposed video expressing this with the two ‘Tourniquet’ songs by Rasputina and Evanescence, which I’ve sometimes listened to in order to get into a Dru/Faith mood. Or an Angel mood in order to write fanfic.
There's something about Dru which inspires me. There are lot of remarkable vampires in the Buffy/Angel universe such as Angel, Spike, Darla, Dracula, Penn, Mr Trick, and the Master. Drusilla occupies a special place in my heart, though. For me, she conveys a little bit of the Gothic Punk/World of Darkness magic whenever she appears.
Not that she isn’t a wonderful character on her own.
Thank you, Joss Whedon and Juliet Landau, for bringing Drusilla to unlife. Thank you, Marti Noxon, for adding that extra layer of Gothic gloss during the second season of Buffy.
All of you have made Dru all the more seductive, scary, and a she-vamp of legend. The world of the undead is all the richer for having her.
