rhodrymavelyneThe Hunger is one of the most beautiful and disturbing movies I’ve ever seen. For all that science seeks to grasp the suspension of age and the savage hunger it brings, followed by rapid aging, suffered by the poor monkeys in their lab in a reflection of would-be immortals, there is something fairy tale-like about its story’s core.
A immortal seduces you with her beauty and an irresistible promise of eternity, but don’t believe Miriam. At best, you’ll get a few centuries of savage youth, as David Bowie’s character John Blaylock did, feasting upon blood at your lover’s side. Age will catch you and death will not release you. You’ll join Miriam’s other loves, trapped in boxes, rotting, too weak to cry out.
Eternal torment is yours. Nothing can free you or can it?
Perhaps all it takes is one person saying no to Miriam. One person, spilling her immortal blood while it’s still warm with youth, to quicken those trapped in the boxes, returning a measure of youth and humanity to them, but they still hunger.
The reluctant immortal takes Miriam’s place. Miriam goes into the box, to suffer the hell she delivered unto so many companions, while those companions wander the world, unsure what will sustain them, yet seeking something.
I couldn’t resist this plot possibility, when recently I started watching The Hunger TV series, a show I kick myself for missing when it first aired. Seeing David Bowie as Julian Priest in all his enigmatic artistry kindled the crossover idea.
What if Julian Priest was actually John Blaylock, given back his humanity, a measure of his youth, but tormented by a hunger he doesn’t understand?
What if he wasn’t the only one of Miriam’s former lovers restored?
What if Lanie, Kate Vernon’s character in The Hunger Season 2: Skin Deep was actually Lallia, Miriam’s companion before John? What if Mano, the blind visionary played by Brad Dourif in Sin Seer, once a detatched and calculating lawyer incapable of feeling, was another of Miriam’s lover’s, driven mad by the box, no longer recalling his immortal existence?
How much do these former immortals recall of their former lives? How traumatized and changed are they by their time in the box? How are they surviving a return to humanity, a state which may well be an awkward fit?
It’s an intriguing crossover to tackle. I haven’t been able to resist writing about it, finding myself drawn into fanfics, speculating about Julian and the others, posting my speculations at Archive of Our Own.
